The Cross

One afternoon, I had a dream,
Laid looking toward the sky.
There stood a pillar and cross-beam,

When said the Lord Most High,
"There are only two ways,
As sure as the bird does fly."

Listening my eyes did gaze,
At the shadow and lack thereof.
On the beam there was no haze,

Half was white, like as a dove.
The other grey and loaded down.
Continuing to gaze above,

My eyes as they began to drown
I likened to the side of grey.
A heavy load it was my crown.

Broken when I heard Him say,
"Your crown, long ago was carried.
A Man in Whom is called the Way,

With Him the weight was buried.
And though the lighter side appeals,
Your options not to be varied."

Purpose, place, now under seals,
Created to obey and trust
For whenever Christ reveals.

"To follow Me, or to rust.
These two options on display."
Be broken of my prideful crust,

The call to trust and obey!
The cross for me to carry,
That which Christ did portray.

Of sin that Christ did bury,
That act is already done.
My cross, I should not be wary,

The victory, as of now, won!
I began to wipe my eyes,
Eyes fixed on only the Son.

My cross it is no surprise,
A death to myself daily.
Old self, hovered with flies,

Who I was, now am, barely.
Cross that was meant for torture,
Vision, I see only nearly.

In pain, with lost composure,
Results too quickly forget.
Of pain, that Christ brought closure,

His pain to heal all regret.
I carry the cross I bear,
One day, I will discard it!

No cross, but eternal life to share,
No tragedy, only beauty.
Seeing this not to be fair,

Result now viewed so clearly.
His cross, my soul it redeemed,
My cross that I was weary.

A painful journey though it seemed.
With it, I gained new body.
Thankful tears my eyes they streamed,

Impatient, I was haughty.
Forgetting my life was mine,
Surrendered to Almighty.

Waking my eyes the sun did shine,
Steel cross standing overhead.
"May I be forever Thine!"

Prayer spoken in my head.
Leaving pillar and cross-beam,
With faith, my feet now will tread.
